I tried to pwd protect the HDD and deliberately enter the wrong pwd 3 times to lock it, then boot with the Alienware recovery USB stick. The SSD however is not available as an option under the boot menu (even when selecting Legacy). I have basically tried to use the USB alienware recovery stick to do a fresh install, but I just cannot get the OS on the SSD. When I got the machine (and after basically moving all my stufff over) I realized that for reasons I just cannot begin to understand the OS was installed on the HDD and not on the SSD. I just bought an Alienware 15 R2 with a 1TB HDD and a 1TB SSD. I really hope there is someone here who can help as I have been struggling for days with this. We welcome everyone and value all of your opinions but attacking another member for their choice in brands will not be tolerated and will result in an immediate ban without warning. I'd just like to add, that I am not tied to Win 8.1, I would probably upgrade to Win 10, but want to make sure everything else was like it was when new. I apologize up front, I just want to get this right for my son. A cursory search in this forum suggests there are issues using the OS Restore (and I'm not sure the OS restore will include all the Alienware specific stuff that was present when new).Įdit: I'm a MAC user and am not very familiar with Windows based systems so if the solution involves anything above basic knowledge please explain. In summary, what is the best/proper way to restore the laptop to original given the above conditions.

Should I use the OS recovery DVD to restore it, or should I install Alienrespawn and do it that way? The intent is to have the laptop just as it was when new (out of the box).
